SCHOOL VISITS

Besides being an author-illustrator, I'm also an educator and curriculum specialist. So, speaking to students and school staff about books and writing is something I love to do!

My in-person and virtual programs include picture books read-alouds and art/music activities for younger grades, and discussions about chapter books, the writing process and my career path for older grades. I am also available for writing workshops for grades 3 and up and professional development for staff. But I can also tailor presentations to your curriculum needs! My goal is to make our time together interactive, educational, and engaging.

Books can be pre-ordered (at least 4 weeks notice) and sessions will include time for book signings and author photos.

EXAMPLE SESSIONS
Option 1 - Recommended for Pre-K and Kinder
After an interactive read aloud, we'll discuss students' feelings about the book and ask some simple comprehension questions. Students can ask me questions about being an author or about my books. If time permits, we'll complete a related arts and crafts activity, musical activity, or game.
Option 2 - Recommended for Grades 1 - 5
How an Idea Becomes a Book: Students will learn about my book process from idea to finish and the steps that go into getting a book published. After an interactive reading, students will participate in a book related activity and ask any burning questions during a Q&A. If time permits, we will complete a releated arts and crafts activity, musical activity, or game.
Option 3 - Recommended for Grades 1 and up
What It's Like to Be an Author-Illustrator: I'll discuss how I became an author-illustrator, my creative process, and why I love my job + reading from one of my books. Q&A
Option 4 - Recommended for Grades 3 and up
Think and Write Like a Children's Book Author: We'll learn ways to brainstorm ideas and characters and determine the purpose and theme of a story. We'll discuss the writing process and learn the power of revision to create an engaging and page-turnable story with strong verbs, effective dialogue, compelling characters, and descriptive words. If time permits, students will brainstorm their own narrative story! Time will be reserved for group sharing and Q&A. Presentation will be tailored to age group and allotted time.
Option 5 - Recommended for Grades 4 and up
Think and Illustrate Like a Children's Book Illustrator: We'll learn ways to create characters, determine style, break up a story into spreads, determine what text should go on each page, and which images would best partner with the text. We'll look at examples of illustrations from my books that include clues to provide more narrative context to move the story forward. If time permits, students will create their own narrative illustration! Time will be reserved for group sharing and student Q&A. Presentation will be tailored to age group and allotted time.
